Released: Enhanced SEO through Item Images on Item Sitemap

We're excited to announce that plentyShop LTS and PlentyONE Shop (formerly known as plentyShop PWA) support image sitemaps going forward.

What is an image sitemap, you ask?

An image sitemap is a file that provides search engines with information about the images on your website. By including details about images in the sitemap, we help search engines discover and index these visuals more efficiently.

Benefits:

  1. Improved Search Engine Rankings: Adding images to your sitemap helps search engines index your site’s visuals more effectively, which can enhance visibility on search results pages.

  2. Enhanced Discoverability: Images play a significant role in product discovery. This feature can help your images appear in image search results, potentially driving more traffic to your shop.

  3. Better User Experience: With images in the sitemap, your products will have greater chances of attracting clicks, giving potential customers a richer preview of what your shop offers.

This feature is another step toward optimizing your webshop’s SEO and boosting overall customer engagement.

How can I use the image sitemap?

We will activate it for all systems, by default, on the 9th of December 2024 If they have the option for Item Sitemap activated.

Until then, you can manually toggle the option if you want.

Important: If you don't wish to generate an item image sitemap, you'll have to deactivate it for the specific client after the date mentioned above.

You can activate/deactivate the image sitemap generation under Setup >> plentyShop >> Client Selection >> SEO >> Sitemap.xml

How does it work exactly?

Once a day, usually during the night, we generate the item sitemap. With the option for the item images active, we'll add up to 5 images of each item to the URL entry of that item.

Note: We only add item images to the sitemap. That means that static images, that are introduced any other way, for example via the shopBuilder, are currently not included. Also note that only the full sized images are referenced.

Here is a sneak peek on how the new item sitemap could look like:
