As announced in December 2024, the PayPal plugin versions 5.x and below will not be available for installation and update from 7th May 2025 on.
Currently installed plugin sets with older plugin versions are not affected, however we strongly recommend you to update.
Reason for the deprecation
The plugin versions 5.x and below are based on the PayPal API v1, which was deprecated by PayPal in 2020. The Plugin in versions 6.x is supporting the new and active PayPal API v2. To improve the focus on maintaining only one - the newest - version and reduce possible stability issues or having to face reduced reliability by using the deprecated API, we decided to deprecated version 5.x and below.
Recommended actions
You will not lose the already built plugin in those version, and it will still work until PayPal shuts down their old API. But you will not be able to select Plugin versions below 6 neither for new installations, nor updates of the installed plugin.
We recommend an update to the newest PayPal version to benefit from the new functionalities it provides. You can check out the PayPal tour when you have installed and build a plugin set containing the new plugin version for a quick introduction.
For users not using the Plugin Version 6, to ensure a smooth transition, it might be needed to contact PayPal for an updated contract to be able to use PayPal Checkout with your PayPal account. The old version is being phased out in favour of the Version 6, which offers improved stability but also the PayPal Checkout and the possibility to activate and use Alternative Payment Methods (APM : "non PayPal payment methods).
